Aquarium Salt Myths

There is a box of aquarium salt at every fish-store checkout, and its label implies your freshwater tank is somehow incomplete without it. This is one of the hobby's oldest pieces of folklore, inherited from an era when salt was one of the only treatments anyone had. Salt is a real tool with real uses, but the everyday-tonic story deserves dismantling, myth by myth.

Myth 1: "Freshwater tanks should always run a little salt"

The tonic myth. The reasoning offered is usually "electrolytes" or "stress reduction", and for the general community tank there is no good case for it. Freshwater fish are physiologically built for fresh water; their kidneys and gills work constantly to keep salts in and water out, and the species most beginners keep, tetras, rasboras, corydoras, plecos, come from some of the most mineral-poor waters on Earth. A permanent salt dose adds a permanent, pointless physiological load. If a tank only does well with salt in it, something else is wrong, and the salt is masking it.

Myth 2: "Salt is gentle, so it can't hurt anything"

Salt tolerance varies enormously. Livebearers like mollies handle brackish conditions happily; corydoras, loaches, and other so-called scaleless fish are markedly salt-sensitive, and most aquarium plants sit somewhere between unhappy and dead as salinity climbs. Shrimp and snails vary by species. A "gentle tonic dose" in a mixed community is a dose calibrated for none of its residents.

Myth 3: "It filters out or evaporates over time"

Chemically wrong, and the most financially convenient myth of the five, since it justifies re-dosing forever. Water evaporates; salt stays. Standard filtration does not remove it either. The only exit for salt is a water change, which means casual repeated dosing quietly ratchets salinity upward. If you ever dose salt deliberately, dose by measured amount for the measured water volume, write it down, and account for it at every top-up and water change afterwards: top up evaporation with plain water (the salt never left), and re-dose only for the water you physically removed.

Myth 4: "Salt cures whatever the fish has"

Salt has genuine antiparasitic and supportive effects in the right concentrations, which is exactly why it became folklore, but "the right concentrations" is doing all the work in that sentence. Levels that inconvenience parasites are levels that also stress salt-tender fish and plants, which is why salt treatment belongs in a bare hospital or quarantine tank where the dose, duration, and patient are controlled, not sprinkled over a display tank at the first clamped fin. And plenty of common ailments, internal infections in particular, do not respond to salt at all; identification first, treatment second.

Myth 5: "Any salt is the same salt"

Aquarium salt is plain sodium chloride. Marine salt mix is a different product entirely: it contains buffers and minerals that deliberately raise pH and hardness, correct for a reef, wrong for a soft-water treatment dose. Table salt is usually fine if it is pure NaCl, but some brands carry anti-caking agents you do not want in a tank. Whichever is used, dissolve it fully in a container of tank water first; undissolved crystals landing on substrate can burn the bottom-dwellers sitting on it.

A word on the "livebearers need salt" tradition

Guppy and molly keepers of a certain generation swear by a permanent teaspoon per gallon, and the tradition is not baseless: mollies in particular tolerate and in some settings genuinely benefit from brackish conditions, and hard, mineral-rich water suits most livebearers. But what those fish are usually missing in a struggling tank is the hardness and stability, the GH and KH covered here, not sodium chloride specifically. If your livebearers are failing in soft water, fix the mineral content; if you keep mollies alone and want to run them brackish, do it deliberately, with a measured salinity and no plants or salt-tender tankmates in the plan.

Where salt genuinely earns its place

Two situations stand out. First, nitrite poisoning: during a cycling accident or filter failure, nitrite in the water gets taken up at the gills and wrecks the blood's oxygen transport. Chloride competes with nitrite at the gill, so a small, measured dose of salt meaningfully protects fish while you fix the actual problem with water changes, a well-documented emergency use. Second, certain external parasite and wound-support treatments, ich among them, have established salt protocols, generally run in a hospital tank at controlled concentrations over days to weeks. Both are treatments with doses and endpoints, researched for the specific species being treated, which is the exact opposite of a pinch with every water change.

The summary fits in a sentence: salt is medicine, not seasoning. Specific dosing depends on species, concentration, and duration, and published protocols differ, so for any real treatment look up the numbers for your exact fish rather than working from a general guide like this one, and when in doubt, the boring trio of clean water, good food, and regular water changes is the tonic that actually works.
