Power Outages and Aquariums
The lights die mid-storm, the filter goes silent, and somewhere in the dark your heater has just become an ornament. First, the reassuring truth: an established aquarium is not a machine that fails the moment the electricity does. It is a body of water with enormous thermal inertia and hours of dissolved oxygen. Most tanks sail through most outages untouched. What turns an outage into a loss is usually panic in the first hour or neglect on the second day, so here is the plan for both.
The first hour: mostly, do nothing
Resist the instinct to intervene. Do not feed (more on why below), do not start changing water, and keep the lid and any tank wrapping closed; every opening spends heat. Water cools far slower than air, and the bigger the tank the slower still, which is one of the quiet reasons large tanks are safer than small ones. In a normally heated home, most tanks take many hours to drift out of their comfort band. Note the current temperature, and simply check it hourly.
Priority one is oxygen, not heat
Counterintuitively, the thing most likely to hurt fish in the first day is not cold but suffocation, and it scales directly with stocking. Oxygen enters water almost entirely at the surface, driven by the agitation your filter and air pump normally provide. With them silent, a lightly stocked tank has a long runway; a heavily stocked one, hours. (If you have ever wondered what your safety margin looks like, it is roughly the gap the stocking planner shows between your tank and 100%.) The best answer is a battery or USB-powered air pump kept charged for exactly this day. The manual fallback works too: scoop out a jug of tank water and pour it back from a foot above the surface, a minute or two of splashing every hour, more often if fish begin hanging at the surface gulping, which is the unmistakable signal that oxygen, not temperature, is the crisis.
Holding heat through a long outage
When the outage stretches and the room itself cools, insulate: wrap the tank's sides and back in blankets, towels, or foam board, leaving a peek-hole for the thermometer. If you have any source of hot water, a gas stove or a camping kettle, fill sealed bottles and float them in the tank, swapping as they cool; never pour hot water in directly. Tropical fish handle a slow slide into the low 70s Fahrenheit far better than people fear; it is speed and extremes that kill. Slow the slide, and match the recovery to it: when power returns, let the heater bring the tank back gradually rather than helping it along. Why the food stays in the tin
Digestion consumes oxygen, and waste production loads a filtration system that currently is not running. Feeding during an outage spends the two resources the tank is shortest of. Healthy adult fish are completely fine unfed for several days (the feeding guide covers why), so the rule is simple: no power, no food, and light rations for a day or two after restoration while the system catches up.
The filter trap nobody warns you about
Your filter media is a colony of oxygen-hungry bacteria. Open filters, sponges and hang-on-backs, sit exposed to air and survive long outages well. A sealed canister is different: it is a closed vessel of warm, oxygen-less water, and after several hours its colony begins to die and rot. Restart a canister after a long outage and it can pump that foul, ammonia-laden water straight into the tank. If your canister has been sealed and stagnant for more than a few hours, open it and dump the standing water, give the media a quick rinse in tank water, refill, and then restart. For any filter, watch the following week for the signs of a mini-cycle, ammonia or nitrite above zero, and answer them with water changes.
The kit to build on a sunny day
- Battery or USB air pump, with air stone and airline, charged.
- A reliable thermometer that needs no mains power.
- Dechlorinator and a couple of clean buckets.
- Blankets or cut foam board that fit the tank's sides.
- Your test kit, for the week after.
Generators, UPS units, and power stations all work if you have them; an air pump draws almost nothing, a heater draws a lot, so budget backup power for aeration first. And treat this page as general guidance: extreme climates, huge tanks, ponds, and delicate species all shift the maths, and your own thermometer and your own fish are the readings that outrank any article.
