Choosing an Aquarium Filter
Short version first, because filter shopping is genuinely confusing: for most community tanks up to around 40 gallons, a decent hang-on-back filter is the sensible default; for larger tanks, a canister; for fry, shrimp, bettas, and quarantine tanks, a humble air-driven sponge. The rest of this guide explains why, and covers the number on the box that misleads almost everyone.
What a filter is actually for
Filters do three jobs, and they are not equally important. Mechanical filtration traps visible particles so the water looks clear. Chemical filtration, usually activated carbon, absorbs dissolved organics and is largely optional in a healthy tank. Biological filtration is the one that keeps fish alive: the filter houses the nitrifying bacteria that convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into far milder nitrate. When comparing filters, you are mostly comparing how much oxygen-rich water they can push past how much bacterial real estate.
The four types, honestly assessed
Sponge filters
A block of foam on a lift tube, driven by an air pump. No moving parts in the tank, nothing to trap a fry or a shrimp, gentle flow, and the entire filter is biological media. They win outright for breeding tanks, shrimp tanks, quarantine, and any small tank with a low-flow-loving fish. Their weaknesses are cosmetic and mechanical: they sit visibly inside the tank, the air pump hums, and they do little polishing, so water may carry more fine particles.
Hang-on-back (HOB) filters
The default for good reason. They hang outside the tank, are easy to clean without disturbing anything, and most accept whatever media you like. Skip the branded throwaway cartridges where possible; a basket of coarse sponge plus ceramic or sintered-glass biomedia outperforms a cartridge you are told to discard monthly, and discarding media throws away your bacterial colony. The HOB's real limits are media volume and the fact that its outflow "waterfall" can be too vigorous for some fish and too shallow a trickle for very deep tanks.
Canister filters
A sealed bucket of media under the cabinet, fed by hoses. Far more media volume than any HOB, flexible intake and outlet placement, and quiet once running. They earn their price on tanks from roughly 40 gallons up, on messy stock like goldfish or big cichlids, and on planted tanks where you want spray-bar flow. The costs: they are more effort to open and service, so owners procrastinate cleaning them, and a neglected canister quietly becomes a nitrate factory.
Internal power filters
A submerged pump-and-sponge unit. Fine for small tanks and as supplementary circulation, but they take up swimming space, most hold very little media, and cleaning them means hands in the tank. Usually the choice you make because one came free with the kit, not the one you would pick from a shelf.
Turnover: the number on the box, decoded
Filter boxes advertise flow in gallons or litres per hour. Divide that by your tank volume and you get turnover: how many times per hour the filter theoretically moves the whole tank through itself. The common guidance for freshwater community tanks is a turnover of roughly 4 to 10 times per hour, with lighter, slow-water fish at the low end and messy or heavily stocked tanks at the high end.
Two corrections before you trust the label. First, rated flow is measured with clean, empty filters and no lift height; real-world flow through packed, partly clogged media is meaningfully lower, which is why experienced keepers routinely buy a filter rated for a tank a size or two larger than theirs. Second, turnover is a proxy, not a goal. A filter with generous biomedia at 5x turnover will beat a media-poor filter screaming along at 12x. Flow only matters insofar as it delivers ammonia and oxygen to bacteria and stirs the whole tank without dead spots.
Sizing it against your stock
Filtration and stocking are two ends of the same equation, which is why the stocking planner asks about your filter before giving a verdict: better filtration genuinely raises how much bioload a given volume can carry, though it never repeals the limit. If your planned stock lands near the top of the safe range, upgrading media volume buys real headroom. And whatever you run, remember the two maintenance rules that outrank brand choice: rinse media in removed tank water, never under the tap, and never replace all of it at once. A weekly water change plus an intact bacterial colony will carry a mediocre filter much further than a premium filter will carry neglect.
Specific models change every season, so this guide deliberately names none; judge any filter by media volume, serviceability, and honest flow, and it is hard to go far wrong.
