Substrate and Live Plants
Put two beginner tanks side by side, one bare with plastic decor, one with a few real plants rooted in sensible substrate, and give them the same fish and the same owner. Six months later the planted one almost always looks better and tests better, and not because its owner worked harder. Live plants eat the same ammonia and nitrate your filter bacteria and water changes fight, they starve algae by competing for light and nutrients, and they give fish the cover that turns hiding species into visible ones. The reputation planted tanks have for difficulty comes from high-tech showpieces with CO2 injection and lighting rigs. That is one hobby. This guide is about the other one.
Choosing the floor: gravel, sand, or aquasoil
Gravel is the default for a reason: cheap, easy to vacuum, available in every colour including ones nature would never permit. Fine gravel (a few millimetres) works well for rooted plants; very coarse gravel traps food where nothing can reach it.
Sand looks the most natural, packs a smooth surface that keeps debris visible on top where the vacuum can take it, and is non-negotiable for barbel-first fish: corydoras and most loaches forage by shovelling their faces through the floor, and coarse substrate wears their barbels down. Rinse it hard before use and add it to the tank before the water, and it is far less trouble than its reputation.
Aquasoil is a nutrient-rich planted-tank substrate that feeds root systems seriously and softens water slightly. It is the right call for a plant-first tank, with two caveats: it costs several times what gravel does, and most brands cloud water and leach ammonia for the first weeks, which conveniently doubles as fuel for a fishless cycle, but rules out adding fish early.
Depth: aim for roughly two inches, a bit more where heavy root feeders will sit, a bit less at the front for looks. Remember substrate displaces water; a deep bed in a small tank meaningfully cuts real volume, which is one of the corrections the tank volume calculator and the stocking planner already make for you.
Seven plants that survive beginners
- Anubias — slow, nearly indestructible, grows in shade. Tie or glue it to wood or rock; if you bury the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem), it rots. The classic first plant.
- Java fern — same deal: rhizome on hardscape, never buried. Tolerates low light and neglect, and even fish that shred other plants usually leave it alone.
- Cryptocoryne — rooted, undemanding, comes in bronzes and greens. Expect "crypt melt": it often drops its leaves after planting, sulks, then regrows adapted to your water. Do not pull it out in week two thinking it died.
- Vallisneria — grass-like ribbons that spread by runners into a background lawn. Plant it, leave it, thin it later.
- Amazon sword — the big centrepiece rosette. A heavy root feeder: in plain gravel or sand it wants a root tab (a buried fertiliser pellet) every few months.
- Java moss — carpets wood, shelters shrimp and fry, grows in almost any light. Untidy by nature; trim or embrace it.
- Floating plants (frogbit, water sprite, red root floaters) — the secret weapon. With their leaves in air they grow fast, which makes them the tank's best nitrogen sponge, and they dim the light below, which shy fish love and algae does not.
The zero-substrate option
For completeness: bare-bottom tanks are a legitimate choice for quarantine, fry-raising, and some goldfish keepers who prize easy cleaning above looks, and every plant on the list above that grows on hardscape, anubias, java fern, and the mosses, plus anything in a pot or floating, will still thrive in one. What a bare tank gives up is the substrate's enormous bacterial surface area and any rooted species, so if you go this route, be more generous with filter media and more patient with cycling.
Planting day, and the six weeks after
Rinse new plants and inspect for hitchhiking snails; remove any wool or lead wrapping and pots; trim dead leaves. Stem and rooted plants go into the substrate with tweezers or patient fingers; rhizome plants go onto hardscape. Then the part nobody advertises: new plants often look worse before they look better, shedding emersed-grown leaves while they build submerged ones. Keep lights to six to eight hours a day on a timer, resist fertilising heavily into a half-empty tank, and give the system six weeks before judging anything.
Ongoing care in a low-tech tank is genuinely modest: trim what overgrows, thin the floaters weekly, push in a root tab when sword leaves pale, and let your normal water change routine supply trace nutrients. Plants that dissolve no matter what, in a tank with decent light, usually signal a species that wanted CO2 injection; swap it for something from the list above rather than fighting it. Light fixtures and fertiliser lines vary too much for one page to prescribe, so treat the specifics here as the reliable baseline they are, and your local water and fixture as the final word.
