Algae Control Without Chemicals

You cannot eliminate algae from an aquarium, and you would not want to; its spores arrive with every plant and fish, and a thin film of it is part of any healthy tank's diet and biology. What you can do is keep it from winning. And the reason to do that without algaecide bottles is not purism: chemicals treat the symptom while the cause keeps producing, they stress shrimp, snails, and plants, and a die-off of poisoned algae rots into exactly the nutrients the next bloom needs. Algae is information. Read it first.

A short field guide

Brown, dusty coating (diatoms). The rust-coloured film that appears in a tank's first months, wiping off everything at a touch. Driven by the silicates and instability of a new setup, it almost always fades on its own as the tank matures. Wipe it, be patient, and do not redesign your tank around a phase.

Green spot and green film on glass. Hard little dots and a general green sheen. This is the "background radiation" of algae: every lit tank grows some. A scraper or an old credit card on the front glass at water-change time is the entire fix; leaving the back glass to it is a respectable choice, not a failure.

Hair and thread algae. Green filaments that lengthen week by week on plants and decor. This is the classic surplus signal: more light and nutrients than your plants are consuming. Twirl it out on a rough stick or toothbrush, then cut the surplus at its source, as below.

Black beard algae (BBA). Dark, stiff tufts along leaf edges, wood, and outflows, and the hobby's most stubborn resident. It loves organic-rich water and unstable conditions, and once established it does not politely leave. Prune the worst-affected leaves entirely, improve maintenance consistency, and accept a long campaign rather than a victory weekend.

Green water. The water itself turns to soup: free-floating single-celled algae, fuelled by strong light plus dissolved nutrients. Handled separately in the cloudy water guide; the short version is light discipline and, if needed, a multi-day blackout, which suspended algae cannot survive.

Blue-green "algae" (cyanobacteria). Slimy blue-green sheets, often over substrate in low-flow corners, with a distinctive musty smell. Technically bacteria, not algae, and a genuine warning sign of accumulated organics and dead spots. Siphon the mats out, vacuum the area, improve circulation, and tighten feeding; it earns more respect than the others because heavy mats can harm livestock beneath them.

The three levers that actually control algae

Light. The lever with the biggest handle. Six to eight hours a day, on a timer so it is boringly consistent, and no direct sunlight on the tank, ever; a sunlit corner grows algae no routine can outrun. If algae persists, shorten the photoperiod before buying anything.

Nutrients. Algae eats the same nitrate and phosphate your plants do, and its food supply is set by your feeding hand and your dilution schedule. Measured feeding (the arithmetic here) cuts the input; regular water changes cut the accumulation; a gravel vacuum removes the decaying matter that feeds the organics-lovers like BBA and cyano. A tank stocked beyond its capacity produces surplus nutrients no matter how carefully it is fed, which is an algae argument for checking the stocking planner as much as a welfare one.

Competition. The most underrated lever. Fast-growing plants, stem plants, vallisneria, and above all floating plants, absorb nutrients more aggressively than algae can and shade the water column while doing it. Heavily planted tanks have algae problems so rarely that planted-tank keepers treat an outbreak as a diagnostic, not a disaster. Even a few bunches of hornwort or a raft of frogbit shifts the balance (easy species here).

About the "clean-up crew"

Livestock helps, with caveats. Nerite snails are superb glass and hardscape cleaners that cannot breed in fresh water; amano shrimp genuinely eat hair algae; otocinclus are gentle film-grazers but need groups and a mature tank with enough algae and biofilm to feed them. What no animal does is fix an imbalance: an algae eater added to a tank with surplus light and nutrients just converts algae into waste, which feeds algae. And beware the classic mistake of buying a "sucker fish" without a species name; that is how foot-long common plecos end up in 20-gallon tanks. Crew are janitors, not engineers.

Put together, the no-chemicals method is unglamorous: identify the algae, shorten and steady the light, feed less, change water on schedule, plant more, scrape what remains, and give changes two to three weeks to show results before reaching for the next lever. Tanks differ, tap water differs, and high-tech planted tanks add CO2 dynamics beyond this page's scope, so treat this as the general playbook it is; but for the ordinary community tank it is the playbook that keeps working.
